Many extraordinary and paranormal phenomena take place during the sleep and dream states.  Night time and the twilight state are also especially conducive to these experiences. While some dreams may be more about psychological processing, others undoubtedly include experiences beyond this, into the realm of the spiritual and metaphysical.

This workshop will explore some of these phenomena, including: visitations from departed loved ones, telepathic, precognitive, clairvoyant and shared dreams, sleep paralysis, and empathic telepathy dreams. This talk will be presented by Seattle dream expert Mimi Pettibone. She offers workshops, groups and private consultations related to dreams, intuition, and conscious and subconscious communication.

Did you know that the heart has an electromagnetic field that can be measured outside of the body?

The Institute of HeartMath is doing some amazing research, and now they have this beautiful video as well (below).  The video illustrates how the electromagnetic field of the heart operates not only within us (in communication with our brain) but how it also extends to our connections and relationships with other people.  When we say we can feel someone’s energy (whether positive or negative), this is no longer a woo-woo-way-out concept.  It is now scientifically documented that the heart generates the largest electromagnetic field in the body, and that it extends beyond the physical body. If we can feel the electric shock of a little spark of static electricity, of course we can also feel the electrical field of another human being.  Some of us are more sensitive to this subtle field, empathic people are especially tuned in to it.  It can be a gift in understanding fellow human beings, and it is also important for empaths and highly sensitive people to learn how to not get overwhelmed by the fields of others.  One way of doing this is learning how to turn up your OWN electromagnetic field, and increase your own heart coherence. When we do this, we are less affected by the energy of others, while still holding the ability (even more so) to tune in and connect with them.

The Institute of HeartMath emphasizes the importance of heart-brain communication and coherence.  When our head and our heart are operating in synch, our electromagnetic field is more coherent, and our heart beat is actually more rhythmically consistent.  This contributes to increased health, and if you are into the Law of Attraction, this is how you influence and interact with the Quantum Field to manifest your desires and create positive relationships.

From the paper ‘The Energetic Heart’ (www.heartmath.org) “…a subtle yet influential energetic system operates just below our conscious level of awareness….this energetic system contributes to the ‘magnetic’ attractions or repulsions that occur between individuals.”  Yes, apparently attraction really is magnetic!  If someone has what we call a ‘magnetic’ personality, it seems that from this scientific perspective they might likely have a very strong electromagnetic field.

It used to be believed that emotions originated in the brain.  Now it is recognized that emotions are a result of  brain-body communication. So how do you get the head and the heart to work together?  One of my specialties in working with private clients is something known as parts therapy. If you’ve ever said ‘part of me wants to buy that car, but part of me wants to save the money’, or ‘part of me wants to loose weight, but part of me wants to eat that cake!’, you are aware (consciously or unconsciously) that we all have ‘parts’ within us.  When these parts are not in agreement we experience the feeling of inner conflict, which  translates energetically and electromagnetically to the heart-brain communication system operating at less than optimal coherence (coherence is the goal).  One of my favorite ways to facilitate a client session is to do parts therapy with the head and the heart. I also add the gut into the equation. That will be another article, as science is now also finding that the gut has it’s own nervous system and intelligence, and is the only organ in the body that can operate independently of the brain. Intuitively we’ve always known this, again I defer to linguistics (one of my other favorite topics!), as how many times do we use expressions like “I had a gut feeling” or “he felt sick to his stomach about it” or  “she had butterflies in her stomach”.   If you would like to book a head-heart-gut session to increase internal coherence, resolve inner conflict, and/or help in decision making, please contact me.

In the mean time I hope you enjoy this video. It shows a visual representation of how I have seen and felt the world since I was a small child. Finally it’s ok to talk about this stuff!

I’ve seen Dr. Daniel Amen on PBS, he is known for his work with brain scans.  And I love Teresa Caputo and her tv show ‘Long Island Medium’ (she is a medium, a very accurate one). I remember thinking “I wish that Amen guy could do a scan of Teresa’s brain”. Well guess what? They did! It happened on the Dr. Oz show. Finally, technology is catching up with ‘metaphysics’. You can watch the video of the show here:

On Sunday (May 19, 2013) I took a nap, and had a dream about a TORNADO.  In the beginning of the dream I was in a house; my cell phone rang and it was a guy named John. The reception started breaking up and I looked out the window to see a tornado. I realized I had better take cover. I scrambled all over the house looking for a safe place to hide, but all the rooms had windows, even downstairs, and I couldn’t find a solid closed basement/concrete type room. Pretty soon I saw out a window that we were in the middle of the tornado. The next thing you know I am lying flat on my stomach, and the tornado ripped the house down. I felt shards of glass hitting my head and the wind was whipping my hair with an intense force. I had a coat on and wanted to pull my hood over my head but something told me it wasn’t over yet.  Sure enough, another blow came and completely tore the entire house down to nothing. I felt more glass shards hitting my head, more wind blasting my hair.
I woke up horrified. This dream seemed out of place with how I felt at the time.  It didn’t fit for regular interpretation, and usually I can get that pretty quickly.
I don’t usually watch the news, but tonight (Tuesday night) something made me tune in for a few minutes. I saw the devastation of the tornado that hit Oklahoma on Monday. Just like the dream I had on Sunday afternoon.
Scientists believe that precognitive dreams like this are actually a survival mechanism. If we lived in a tribe and someone had a dream like this, we might actually take it as a warning, and have more time to prepare  and get ourselves to safety.
The key is not to assume all bad dreams are warnings. I think this is why so many people are afraid of dreams; perhaps they have had a ‘warning’ dream, and then become afraid that any and all unpleasant dreams will actually happen. The truth is, all dreams are there to HELP us – whether to prepare us, warn us, or show us potential outcomes, or current life dynamics. Maybe we can’t stop a tornado, but we can do everything in our power to get to safety, and the more notice we have, the better. Other warning dreams may be of scenarios that are indeed preventable. It is important to listen to them, and start to recognize your own dreaming patterns. This one didn’t fit with my life at the time or seem to have a solid ‘interpretive’ value.  That is one clue that it might be an extra-ordinary dream.

A dreamer writes:
I had a dream last night and I’m not sure of the true meaning.  In the beginning of the dream, I was pregnant and was spending time with my boyfriend watching movies and having a nice time.   Time progresses and I have the baby (a boy) and my boyfriend and I are really happy and I realize that we decided not to tell our family members until he was born and I decided to post it on Facebook (random, right?)  Both of us are close to our families so I’m not sure why it was hidden from them, or why i felt anxious to share the news or why i was even dreaming about being pregnant?  I felt attached the the baby and the room was white and he was wrapped in a blue blanket in a soft cradle.
My boyfriend and I both want kids but after we get married and it would be in a few years (and i’m not pregnant). This is the first time a dream had felt truly real in a long time and left me with an inkling of something missing or unknown.
I may be reading way to much into this but all day when i have tried to shrug it off i just kept feeling like a void that needs answers.

Answer:
In general, and on a symbolic level, dreams of pregnancy and babies represent new beginnings. Since you and your boyfriend both actually want children and plan to be married, there are a couple ways to look at this dream:
1) On a symbolic level, is there something new that you and your boyfriend are starting, that your families don’t know about? Try to get out of the literal aspect of the dream and think generally, asking yourself:  “is there something that my boyfriend and I are keeping private for now, that we are not sharing with our families?”
Then there is another level to look at dreams….
2) Is it precognitive?  Dreaming is the #1 place that any kind of precognitive (that means you dream it before it happens) or psychic activity is known to take place. Is this dream a glimpse of the future? Only time will tell, that is not my role to say. But what is your sense? Do you feel like this was a premonition? If you have a strong gut sense, then that may be the case. I always like to explore the layers – dreams are mysterious and fascinating that way. So I’m not calling any predictions but ask your intuition what fits, and if this void you are feeling is an awareness of something yet to come.
I hope this helps,

Paranormal and Extraordinary Phenomena in Sleep and Dreams
Have you ever dreamed of a departed loved one, and wondered if their spirit had really come to visit you? Or dreamed of an encounter or event that later actually happened? This workshop will explore some of the unusual and mysterious aspects of sleep and dreams, including:

Precognitive Dreams

After Death Contact Dreams

Night Terrors vs. Nightmares

Clairvoyance

Sleep Paralysis

Lucid Dreaming

Shared Dreams

and Empathic Telepathy

Many people have experienced one or more of these, yet often we keep the experience to ourselves and do not realize how many others are also having them.  This workshop is a chance to get these topics out in the open.  Whether you are a skeptic, a believer, or a seeker, your curious mind is encouraged to attend.

*This workshop is a private event for members of The Bellevue Club, Oct. 18, 6:30-8:30pm.

Hypnogogic State – The transitional, twilight state between being awake and falling asleep. In this state it is common for paranormal phenomena to occur, including auditory and/or visual hallucinations, out of body experiences, sleep paralysis and sleep paralysis attacks.

Hypnopompic State – Same as the hypnogogic state, except this term refers to the transition from sleep to waking.

Out of Body Experience (O.B.E.) –  When a person’s consciousness leaves the body and is able to observe the physical surroundings such as the bedroom they are in.  This may also involve travelling around, yet still viewing the physical surroundings as we know them in waking reality.

Near Death Experience (N.D.E.) – (a form of O.B.E.) A person may be pronounced clinically dead, only to later come back to life later.  Many will report conversations they overheard (for example between surgeons at the operating table if they died in a hospital) that are later confirmed, and the person would have had no way of knowing this information otherwise. This brings up the interesting and fascinating distinction between mind and brain, as consciousness (mind) is surviving without and beyond the death of the physical matter (brain).

Astral Projection –  When consciousness leaves the physical body and travels, similar to an Out of Body Experience, but the travel is through a more dream like, other worldly realm.

Lucid Dreaming – Becoming aware of the fact that one is dreaming during the experience of having a dream.  For more information read Robert Waggoner’s fascinating book “Lucid Dreaming”.  For more info, go here: https://www.thedreamdetective.com/faq.html#lucid

After Death Contact (A.D.C.) – When a deceased loved one comes to visit us in our dreams.  While some dreams of loved ones who have crossed over are ways of processing our loss, other are reported as feeling very ‘different’ than regular dreams. Some of the hallmarks of A.D.C. dreams are that they feel very real, as if the loved one were actually with the dreamer.  The dreamer may report smelling grandma’s perfume or grandpa’s cigar, and often the dream takes place in the dreamer’s bedroom, which is not the case for most dreams.  Sometimes a dream ‘already in progress’ may be interrupted by the appearance the deceased loved one, who almost always brings messages of comfort and love in any of these scenarios.  Many people also have these dreams of former pets who have crossed over as well.

Shared Dreams or Mutual Dreaming – The experience of having the same dream at the same time as another person.  Usually this occurs between people who are emotionally close such as siblings, close friends, family members or romantic partners. The degree of the ‘shared’ experience may vary from part of each person’s dream being the same (overlapping), to the entire dream being identical for both dreamers.  People sometimes intend for a shared dream experience, visualizing it and agreeing on a meeting spot before going to sleep.

Sleep Paralysis – In R.E.M. sleep our body becomes paralyzed so that we don’t physically act out what we are dreaming about, as this could be very harmful to our self and others.  When we wake up the paralysis releases, however sometimes there is a ‘glitch in the system’ where the paralysis takes a little longer to release.  Becoming conscious and finding that the body is paralyzed can be a terrifying experience that about 20-30% of the population will experience at some time. However, it usually resolves itself and is nothing to be afraid of.

Sleep Paralysis Attacks – A phenomenon that sometimes occurs during the state of sleep paralysis, where the dreamer reports a visitation. The visitor is most often described as either a dark, shadowy figure, or something know as ‘the old hag’, who is reported to look something like a Halloween witch. This phenomenon has been reported all over the world through out history.  Researcher David Hufford wrote a book about this called ‘The Terror that Comes in the Night’.

Nightmares – Scary dreams that often will wake us up with a pounding heart and covered in sweat.  These are R.E.M. dreams and are important to pay attention to when working through life’s difficulties.  If a nightmare relives a trauma and repeats with no progression or resolution over time, this would indicate a P.T.S.D. nightmare and professional guidance with an experienced professional is recommended.

Night Terrors – Different than a nightmare, these do not occur in R.E.M. sleep, but rather in stage 4, or the deepest, non-dream sleep. Often night terrors cause the sufferer to scream out loud, but upon waking they will have no recollection of any kind of dream or what happened.

Daydreams – A relaxed state (similar to a hypnotic trance) where creativity, imagination, problem solving and learning consolidation occur.  As part of our circadian rhythm (similar to the 90 minute cycles between R.E.M. dreams when asleep), we have a natural tendency to daydream about every 70-120 minutes through out the day.

Precognitive Dreams – Dreams that pick up on potentials for the future that may or may not play out. There have been reports of people who have had a precognitive dream and later recognized a dangerous situation in waking life because of the dream.  They were then able to make a course correction to prevent the potential negative outcome because the dream provided them with the warning and awareness to do this.

Clairvoyant Dreams –  A dream during which the dreamer is able to witnesses an outside event (happening in waking reality) at the same time it is actually occurring.

Empathic telepathy –  Similar to a clairvoyant dream, except that instead of witnessing an event as an outside observer during the dream, the dreamer experiences the event as if it were happening to them – in a sense assuming the identity of someone that the waking life event is actually happening to.

While many people may experience an upsetting but soon to pass case of sleep paralysis, others report an even more terrifying occurrence that happens while in this paralyzed state: the sensation of being visited by some kind of entity. Coined ‘Paralysis Attacks’ by David Hufford, Professor of Behavioral Science at Penn State University, these experiences are described by those who experience it as a visitation by an negative presence.  Hufford has done extensive research, and has been able to identify over 30 common elements to these attacks. The prevailing common denominators are:

  • Waking up in bed and realizing one can’t move
  • The person can move their eyes, but the body is paralyzed
  • Hearing footsteps
  • A figure enters the room (often described as dark, not human, intent to harm, some sort of presence but not sure what)
  • Incredible sense of fear
  • A feeling of weight or pressure upon the chest (sometimes other areas of the body, most commonly the chest)
  • A sense that if the person just laid there, they would die.
  • The experience feels very real, different than a normal dream or nightmare.

Accounts of this phenomenon are documented in art and literature as far back as we have historical records, and in fact, Hufford doesn’t know of any culture, anywhere, that doesn’t have a tradition describing it. Known by different names around the world: ‘The Old Hag’, ‘Popabawa’, ‘Demon’, ‘Witch’, or just a dark figure or shadow, the description of the experience is the same.

People in this state are able to accurately describe their environment, indicating a state of being awake, yet brain wave recordings taken during attacks show elements of both wakefulness and REM sleep. Victims are usually convinced they are awake and that this was not a dream. They are actually in a mixed state of consciousness between wakefulness and dreaming, also known as a hypnopompic state (when a person is falling asleep, as opposed to waking up, the same mixed state is known as the hypnogogic state).

It would be easy enough to attribute the whole description to a bad dream or nightmare; but that doesn’t explain why so many people – including many who have never heard of this phenomenon – report such similarities in their accounts. While there are variations in individual reports, the similarities cannot be ignored. In fact, the descriptions bear uncanny similarity to alien visitation reports, and Hufford believes these are actually cases of sleep paralysis attacks.

Science as of yet does not have a sufficient explanation for this baffling phenomenon, which does not reduce the suffering of those who experience this terrifying occurance. For more information, check out Hufford’s book: ‘The Terror That Comes In The Night’

During REM sleep, an interesting thing happens to our body: we become physically paralyzed. Most of the time we are unaware of it, because we are asleep and in the dream state. But occasionally a person will wake up and become consciously aware of the fact that they cannot move their body, and a state of fear and panic sets in. They are still able to move their eyes around, just as they do in REM sleep, but the body is paralyzed.  It usually lasts anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, but that time can feel like a terrifying eternity.

It is believed that sleep paralysis is a protective mechanism so that we don’t physically act out our dreams; imagine the mess, bumps and bruises we would wake up to if we did!  While most of the time the transition between sleeping and waking goes smoothly, it is estimated that anywhere from 20-30% of the world’s population will at some time experience the phenomenon of sleep paralysis.

The causes are generally unknown.  For some people it may be triggered by factors such as increased stress, lack of sleep, a changing sleep schedule, sudden changes in lifestyle, use of certain medications, or substance abuse.  For others, it can be associated with narcolepsy, or night time leg cramps. For most people there is no determining explanation.

While scary, it is only temporary, and for the majority of people it may happen once or twice in a lifetime and is nothing to worry about.

In Dean Radin’s book “Entangled Minds” he writes about many different scientific experiments that confirm the existence of psychic phenomena, also known as ESP or ‘psi’. It seems that people who are very closely bonded together experience more psychic connections with each other than those who are not close or emotionally invested in one another.
Dean cites an experiment involving a functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) scanner.  They found a couple who did well in other psi tests where they were able to send and/or receive information to/from each other with successful results much better than random chance.  One person was put in the fMRI scanner to act as the ‘receiver’ while the other person (the ‘sender’) was exposed to a flickering light. The purpose of the light was to stimulate the brain activity of the ‘sender’, and to see if anything would happen at the same time to the brain of the ‘receiver’.  The receiver’s brain showed a significant increase in activity, with odds against chance of 14,000 to 1!  Not only were they able to show an increase in brain activity at the exact same time, but the fMRI machine was able to show the specific location in the brain where the connection was found. WOW!
Why is this information such a well kept secret? Part of Dean’s plight is about how difficult it is for the existence of psi to be taken seriously, regardless of the scientific evidence confirming it.  I agree, and appreciate Dean’s humor as he comments on the nature of this:
“This discovery is so shocking that it virtually guaranteed no one would hear about it, despite it being published in a medical journal. This is worse than missing a story about aliens landing on the White House lawn. It’s more like spotting an alien shopping in the frozen food section of the local grocery store and no one caring.”
(For all his scientific expertise, the man has a sense of humor, too! Most of his writing is not pondering aliens, I just thought this excerpt was too funny to leave out!)
His other book “The Conscious Universe: The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena” will be released in June, I can’t wait!
